What KahawaTrace is
KahawaTrace is web-based software for registering coffee farmers, mapping their plots by GPS, checking and approving those maps, and exporting traceability data. "Kahawa" is the Swahili word for coffee. The platform runs in any modern web browser, including on everyday Android phones used by field agents.
The problem we work on
Coffee buyers, and the EU Deforestation Regulation in particular, now expect proof of where coffee was grown, down to the plot. Most Kenyan smallholders have never had their farms mapped. Paper member lists and spreadsheets cannot show plot boundaries, cannot be checked against satellite imagery, and break down when hundreds of agents collect data at once. KahawaTrace turns that field work into a single checked record.
Who we serve
- Coffee cooperatives and factories that need a reliable register of members and their plots
- Estates mapping their own blocks
- Exporters and compliance teams preparing geolocation data for due diligence statements
- Field agents and supervisors who do the mapping and checking
What we believe
- Precision: GPS averaging, visible accuracy and six-decimal coordinates
- Transparency: every plot carries its status and full history
- Respect for farmers: consent is recorded before any data is saved, in line with Kenya’s Data Protection Act, 2019
- Simplicity: it works in a phone’s browser, with no app store install
